Sheltering Wright: My essay in NEWSWEEK
“The longer I live, the more beautiful life becomes.” ~Frank Lloyd Wright It’s hard to believe a full year has passed since the global pandemic reshaped the way we live every day. Last spring, when the monotony of living in lockdown set in, Doug and I decided to spend more time at our Wright home (the Carl Schultz house) in St. Joseph. Prior to the pandemic, we’d put a great deal of effort into renovating and upgrading the home and its surrounding property — but rarely took time to actually live in the place and enjoy the results of our labor. Coco’s rescue story in “Victoria”
“Saving one dog will not change the world, but surely for that one dog, the world will change forever.” ~Karen Davison I still get a thrill whenever my byline appears in a national publication — but this one is twice as special to me. Victoria is one of my favorite lifestyle magazines, and I’m always proud to have my work published in its pages. This week, I heard from a fellow newspaper columnist who happened to spot a feature article I wrote for Writer’s Digest on how to snag your own newspaper column. Until my friend contacted me, I wasn’t aware that the archived piece (from 2008) is now available to read online. Though it’s not as easy to land a column today, it’s not impossible if your area of specialty isn’t well represented yet. To read my article in Writer’s Digest, click here.

Mother’s Day “Ideals”
Ideals magazine was launched in 1944 with a Christmas issue compiled by Van B. Hooper, a public relations manager for a Milwaukee, Wisconsin, manufacturer. Over the years it has featured the writings of well-known authors such as Edgar Guest, Sue Monk Kidd, Chris Bohjalian, Susan Allen Toth, Garrison Keillor, and many others. Now produced by Guideposts, the magazine continues its celebration of American holidays with timeless stories, quotations, poetry, recipes, and fine art illustrations. Since 2008, several of my own essays (including a few from my book, Writing Home) have been published in several issues of Ideals and its hardcover gift anthologies. This spring, my essay describing my son’s first year away from home (“Field…
