Coco’s rescue story in “Victoria”
“Saving one dog will not change the world, but surely for that one dog, the world will change forever.” ~Karen Davison I still get a thrill whenever my byline appears in a national publication — but this one is twice as special to me. Victoria is one of my favorite lifestyle magazines, and I’m always proud to have my work published in its pages. This time, the March/April issue includes a new piece I wrote about adopting our sweet rescue dog, Coco, shown in the photo here. The issue is available in bookstores, Walgreen’s, and on newsstands this week. ~Cindy La Ferle

Throwback Thursday essay: Letting go of “everyone”
“You do not need everyone. What you do or create isn’t for or about ‘everyone.’ Finding those who are believers in what we believe is what matters.” ~Seth Godin Cindy La Ferle At a dinner party recently, some friends and I discussed a few topics that are creating a cavernous divide in our country. As it happens, those friends are kindred spirits who share my political and cultural views. That night, it was a comfort to be able to discuss volatile issues “in a safe place,” as one put it.We also agreed, later, that it’s a shame we don’t feel safe enough to have open, civil discussions with family and friends who…

An early spring break
“Life is made up of small pleasures. Happiness is made up of those tiny successes.” ~Norman Lear Cindy La Ferle It doesn’t happen as often as I’d like, but once in a while my work gets published in a magazine without much effort on my part. Late last year, for instance, I received an unexpected letter and a contract from an editor at Ideals magazine, requesting my permission to reprint a piece from my book, Writing Home. This week, two advance copies of Ideals Springtime 2018 arrived in the mail — a promising start for my new year. My essay in this issue is about a surprise gift (a box of…

A new season of parenting
A shaky child on a bicycle for the first time needs both support and freedom. The realization that this is what the child will always need can hit hard.” ~Sloan Wilson Note: This essay was published earlier this year (“A New Season of Parenting”) in Metro Parent magazine. It was written especially for friends whose children will be starting college this fall… It’s going to be a roller coaster year for a friend whose youngest child will graduate from high school in May, then head out of state to college in August. My friend is already working through some conflicting emotions. She gets a little teary at the thought of…

Writing a newspaper column
Last week, I posted a column I wrote about my son’s boyhood career as a newspaper carrier. This week, I heard from a fellow newspaper columnist who happened to spot a feature article I wrote for Writer’s Digest on how to snag your own newspaper column. Until my friend contacted me, I wasn’t aware that the archived piece (from 2008) is now available to read online. Though it’s not as easy to land a column today, it’s not impossible if your area of specialty isn’t well represented yet. To read my article in Writer’s Digest, click here.
