My photos in Michigan BLUE
Those who’ve followed this blog for a while are familiar with my old friend, Apollo. This month, a couple of my garden photos, and Apollo himself, are featured in a Michigan BLUE Magazine piece by Detroit journalist Jeanine Matlow. Titled “Hot Pots, Creative Expression,” the article includes tips for planting container gardens. The Spring 2020 issue of Michigan BLUE showcases the natural beauty of our state, including a gorgeous feature on the gardens of Mackinac Island. To see my photos in this issue, please click here. While you’re visiting the site, please take a moment to check out the variety of articles and photos essays on our state. It’s the perfect eye…

Fear, panic, the president, and the COVID-19 pandemic
Cindy La Ferle “You never know how strong you are until being strong is the only choice you have.” ~Bob Marley This week it’s been hard to shake the feeling that I’m living in an episode of The Walking Dead. The entire first floor of our home looks like a disaster relief center, with boxes of kitchen equipment, dinnerware, and canned goods piled on every available surface. As you might guess, we’re in the middle of a kitchen remodeling — a lousy project to have in process while the nation is battling the coronavirus pandemic. Helping Your Aging Parents: “Moving Mom”
“There are only four kind of people in the world. Those who have been caregivers. Those who are currently caregivers. Those who will be caregivers, and those who will need a caregiver.” ~Rosalyn Carter The decision to move an elderly parent to a nursing home or an assisted living residence is never easy. I wrote about the experience with my own mother for Metro Parent magazine’s Guide to Helping Your Aging Parents. You can read it here. Photo above: My mother dressed for her senior prom in the 1940s.

How to be an original
“Do your own thing. Let others own their own thing. If you copy too much, you’ll find yourself in late night cocktail lounge cover band limbo.” ~Kurt Cobain Hasn’t it all been done before? Is there any such thing as a truly original idea? Contrary to the old maxim, imitation isn’t the highest form of flattery. It’s a creative cop out. My essay on the challenge of finding your own voice and style is featured this week on the National Society of Newspaper Columnists website. You can read it here. Photo by Cindy La Ferle

Tea Time magazine
“Come, let us have some tea and continue to talk about happy things.” ~Chaim Potok Tea Time magazine, July/August 2019 / Cindy La Ferle For social media sharing buttons and more content, please visit the home page. My love affair with tea began at the kitchen table in my Scottish grandmother’s home when I was a little girl. While I also grew to appreciate a strong cup of coffee much later, I still enjoy the pleasures of tea — hot or cold. So I’m especially happy to add Tea Time magazine to my list of published credits. Available nationally this month, the July/August issue contains a new essay about both of…
