Remain calm

“Within you there is a stillness and a sanctuary to which you can retreat any time.” ~Hermann Hesse

Lately, a friend and I often joke that our blood pressure spikes every time we watch the news. Given the unpredictable political changes ahead, not to mention the devastating wildfires in California, it’s a challenge to remain calm while staying informed. The best we can do is to stay centered — especially when we wonder if everything around us is falling apart.

“Sanctuary” is one of the most beautiful words in our language. It conjures images of a safe, holy place — a room or a building — that offers an escape from the outside world. A sanctuary heals and nurtures the soul, making us stronger when it’s time to face the world again.

We can also create a sanctuary, a place of peace, in our minds. As today’s quote suggests, I’m learning to “retreat” to my own sanctuary when I need to. For me, that means getting enough rest and spending more time with good books and positive people who make me feel grounded as well as inspired. It also means limiting time with anyone or anything that triggers my anger, anxiety, or resentment, including the nightly news. Where do you find your own sanctuary? ~CL
