Got enemies?
“You have enemies? Why, it is the story of everyone who has done a great deed or created a new idea. It is the cloud which thunders around everything that shines. Fame must have enemies, as light must have gnats. Do not bother yourself about it. Keep your mind serene as you keep your life clear.” ~Victor Hugo
There’s another similar quote that’s often misattributed to Winston Churchill. It goes something like this: “If you have enemies, that’s good. It means you stand for something.”
Popularity is overrated. If you’re living authentically and being true to yourself, it’s nearly impossible to be loved by everyone all the time. But if you’re still playing the Nice Person role — bending over backwards to please or impress everyone — your spineless posture should be bothering you by now.
Authenticity isn’t easy. Creatively bold efforts can inspire jealousy and anger as well as admiration. Likewise, speaking your mind when others disagree can feel risky. Victor Hugo’s quote warns that you’re bound to have detractors when you’re working to make a difference or speaking your truth. But you’ll also attract like-minded allies to keep you company on the journey. Sail on, and “keep your life clear.” ~CL

So true! I always tell myself that if I don’t like everyone, then it stands to reason that everyone can’t like me. And it is perfectly ok! It is very freeing to finally be able to settle with this.

That’s the absolute truth, Sheryl. Thanks for reminding me of that too. 🙂
