A quiet winter walk
“If you are seeking creative ideas, go out walking. Angels whisper to a man when he goes for a walk.” ~Raymond Inmon
Hippocrates believed that walking is the “best medicine,” and those of us who make it a daily habit know there’s some truth in his prescription. After adopting Coco, Doug and I started walking nearly every day, even in wintery weather. Coco loves nothing more than a long stroll outdoors, and for the past several years we’ve been motivated by her enthusiasm.
Now in recovery after she was hit by a car, Coco is banned from her walks for another five weeks — so Doug and I have to motivate ourselves to get our daily exercise without her. It’s easier to get lazy.
I remind myself that a walk outside is the best way to get back in touch with nature in any season, and can do wonders to lift a bad mood.
But experts claim that we won’t get the full benefits of walking unless we leave the chatter behind — and that includes headphones, EarPods, and chatty walking partners.
“Silent walking may combine the mental acuity benefits of walking with the neurological benefits of silence to turn into an all-around workout for the brain,” notes psychologist Mark Travers in Psychology Today. To read the full article, click here. Walk on! ~CL
