“A friendship can weather most things, and it can thrive in thin soil. But it needs a little mulch of notes and phone calls and small, silly presents every so often, just to save it from drying out completely.”

Love that quote; shared it on my Facebook friendship page!
Things that make me happy
I'm honored that you shared it, Irene — thanks so much, friend!

I had a phone call yesterday from a friend in Colorado. We have not been able to stay in close touch of late but she called, opening with "I just wanted to call you and actually talk because I've decided that I need to work a little harder at keeping my good friends close." We will always be close friends, and if we don't talk for weeks we are those friends who can pick up where we last left off…but it was a much needed call and affirmation to the fact that social media isn't all that it's cracked up to be. Send the note, make the phone call. What a perfectly timed post. I love it.

Tina — I LOVE your story about this special friend of yours. And you are right — that moment of personal conversation went a long way toward reinforcing a great friendship! All too often, all of us are guilty of neglect, or we are under the false impression that "liking" comments on Facebook means we're friends, or that we only have to get together for lunch twice a year to be good friends. Emotional connection takes effort, time, and thoughtfulness. You and your friend already know that, of course 🙂

Even emailing, which seemed impersonal once, went out the window when Facebook came along. I'm finding if not snail mail…a good 'catch-up' email works just as well (again). Which reminds me…I need to email you.
Things that make me happy
I agree, Tina. Email is like writing a letter, to me, and it's instant gratification too. You can take your time composing a draft, then send it as soon as it's ready. I do like sending snail mail cards — and I know you do too 🙂

I'm the friend. I shared our phone call in a post I did yesterday too. https://www.eatyourbooks.com/blog/2018/1/31/the-immigrant-cookbook
